2017 has been the year of south and also powerful female characters! This year we saw actresses pull off incredible stuff – right from spear heading an entire film to bringing alive a powerful yet sensitive character to adding their own uniqueness to an otherwise cliched role. Right from Nayanthara to Anushka to Sai Pallavi to Kajal Aggarwal – each of them shone like a million watts and left us thinking with their brilliant performances. Nayanthara – She has been the game – changer of 2017. Earlier this year, she starred in a lead role in Dora, a horror film directed by Doss Ramasamy. While the film opened to a lukewarm response, her performance was appreciated. In the latter of the half, she turned heads with her powerful role in Aramm, a film based on a socially relevant issue. The moving storyline coupled with her superstar aura and a credible performance has made Aramm one of the most recommended films of this year. Nayanthara once again has re written the rules for female lead roles with this film.
Jyothika – After 36 Vayadhinile, Jyothika came up with another women centric film – Magalir Mattum that also starred Saranya, Urvashi and Bhanupriya. The film threw light on the importance of a woman’s freedom depsite being tied down by other relations and responsibilities. The movie fared decently and Jyothika was appreciated for her free spirited performance.
Sai Pallavi – This year, Malayalm actress Sai Pallavi debuted in Tollywood with Fidaa opposite Sai Varun Tej. On its release, she was the biggest highlight of the film. She brought a vibrance to movie that otherwise had a typical story to tell. Anushka Shetty – As a devasena. she was the definition of a fire cracker – Bright, fiery and sparkling! She not only took our breath away with her striking beauty but had us applauding for her dynamo act. Such was her screen presence that our attention would often shift to her even when Amarendra Baahubali was on screen. Parvathy – Take-off was based on a true incident that involved rescuing nurses from Iraq. The film starred Malayalam actress, Parvathy in the lead along with Kunchacko Boban and Fahadh Faasil in supporting roles. The poignant story along with Parvathy’s empowering performance made Take-off one of the most talked about Malayalam films of 2017. Parvathy was already a force to reckon but with Take-off, she entered a new league.
Kajal Aggarwal – Kajal Aggarwal was part of three films this year of which her role in Nene Raju Nene Mantri was most appreciated. Her character in the political drama evolved from being the gullible homemaker to strong woman who stands up for what she believes even it means going against her husband. The multiple layers to her character made her one of the most intriguing characters. Also, we have to admit, she looked stunning!
Rakul Preet Singh – Bubbly, happy-go-lucky girl characters have been done to death, even then Rakul Preet Singh brought in her own characteristics to one such role in Rarandoi Veduka Chuddam. She played a typical family girl who was traditional at heart, but something about her character was relatable, flawed and delightfully real. Rakul brought out various emotions beautifully in this film. From denial to regret to anger, Rakul gave us a glimpse of varied moods.
